Statement

When I make a drawing the act of putting pencil to paper begins a process that gives concrete visual form to abstract ideas. I approach drawing as an open-ended project of intellectual and imaginative enquiry. I am often uncertain at the outset as to what direction the project might take. It is a process of ongoing research and practice that leads to deeper insights as the work takes shape. When it goes well one idea leads easily to the next to create a body of interlinked drawings. I incorporate randomised decision-making into my drawing as a catalyst to unlock creative innovation. I choose simple means in order to reduce the number of decisions I have to make. I aim to find a balance between intuitive decision-making and planned randomisation.
